Support Sai Kung Mummies by shopping locally

2020 - A Tough Year for Our Mummy Businesses in Sai Kung !

2019 and 2020 so far have been really tough years for some of the Mummy run small businesses in Sai Kung. These small businesses mostly don’t have physical shops and rely on school and hotel fairs and events such as the Hebe Haven 24 hour race and Sai Kung pop ups for their livelihood. Many of these events have been cancelled in the last 12 months, firstly due to the protests back in late 2019 followed by the Coronavirus pandemic through 2020. This has decimated the small businesses in Sai Kung who have lost 95% of their custom and are struggling to survive.

One of the ideas we are keen to promote is the idea of sourcing goods locally, not only does this support our local community businesses but also cuts down our environmental impact as our goods travel less distance to get to us and therefore use less fuel. With that in mind we though it was timely to write a quick blog about some of our favourite Sai Kung Mummy businesses. So, if you need a quick birthday present or treat for yourself take a look at some of our favourite Sai Kung Mumtrepreneurs and their offerings below. So if you are thinking of picking up a present or item for your home why not try going locally first before reaching for Amazon or heading to Central?

Sue Tyson Designs

Originally hailing from the UK, with degree in European Languages.
I moved to the Far East in 1995 and immediately thrown into a vibrant and exciting new world – a kaleidoscope of colours, sounds and aromas!   Largely self taught apart from a stint at Central St Martins College of Art and silversmithing classes in Dubai, I was drawn to design and handcraft after trips to Italy and Turkey.  Watching Artisans passionately sawing, moulding and creating with Silver, Glass, Wood, Shell, has stayed with me forever.  In the climate of ever changing technology I feel it’s vital to cherish handcrafts & traditional skills.  I’m mesmerised by light-infused glass, shadows, textures and patterns and inspiration comes from a myriad of sources; stained glass church windows, stormy skies, foliage, landscapes, seascapes. The Natural world.

Sai Kung Scuba

Ok, technically this a slight outlier as this is also a physical Sai Kung shop and is definitely not owned and run by a Mummy although Neil is definitely a Sai Kung resident. Sai Kung scuba has a new shop and it has opened at perhaps the most difficult time for the World and Sai Kung so we thought we would give him a little boost.

Sai Kung Scuba is a PADI Dive Centre offers a range of PADI Courses and Fun Dives for all levels of experience. The shop (located in the old town behind the temple car park) also sells dive equipment such as BCD’s masks and fins. In addition you can pick up a range of other items such as mossie repellent, straws, bottles etc.

Easy English For Kids

Angela who runs EEK has been in Hong Kong for 15 years and has raised two children who are almost grown but have flown the nest for University. She has been running EEK an english learning centre for over 10 years. Some years ago, after seeing a gap in the market for educational toys, Angela started the shop side of her business selling wooden toys. As you can imagine moving these items around Hong Kong to sell at markets was not easy which sparked the idea for Angela’s newest items. EEK’s shop has evolved and now sells and distributes a wonderful product from the UK called Gifts in a Tin. The tins are a great size to pop in your bag when going out to a restaurant, they will keep your little ones occupied for hours! There are a wide range of designs available to suit all ages, Angela even stocks a tool set in a tin for adults. These gifts are also easy to post for Christmas and birthday gifts, which given the current climate could be something lots of us are looking for this year.
